"Is it embarrassment? Acne? What's
going on that makes my skin so red?"
Rosacea's one of the most misunderstood skin
conditions people suffer with. Many women think
they either have super-sensitive skin, acne or are
just unlucky to look embarrassed all time. Male
sufferers are sometimes thought to be "heavy
drinkers"
even if the most potent thing they ever consume is a
cup of coffee!
Rosacea doesn't have a medically determined cause,
though it
does have "triggers" that cause a flareup. Stress and
eating spicy foods are just two of many Rosacea Triggers.
What does Rosacea look
like? It can look like a sunburn, embarrassed
flushing, acne or if undiagnosed, it can look as
disfiguring as W.C. Field's nose.
There is no "cure" for Rosacea, much like there is no
cure for Acne, but there are a number of safe and
very effective treatments to control Rosacea
and minimize flareups.By incorporating
some
simple preventive measures, knowing your triggers
and using appropriate medical intervention, Rosacea
can stop being a problem.

We've added a 3 month Post-Thermage
photo
of Jennifer. See what the changes are and what she
has to say. (And forgive us for the helter skelter
lighting! We're changing that so the photos are more
readily comparable)
For those of you who just joined our E-News, we're
keeping watch on Jennifer's Thermage progress. We
decided the best way to show you what Thermage
does is to give you a monthly progress photo of our
own patient.

| Upcoming Botox Day - September 21 |
 |
Allergan, makers of Botox, is sponsoring a Botox
Day September 21 from 2 to 7 P.M. All of our Botox
patients that day will receive special gifts provided
by our
Allergan representative. As an extra incentive,
we're taking $50 off your Botox treatment.
(Which you might want to use for some new mascara
and eye shadow to show off your younger looking
eyes.) Men are learning about the Botox
advantages. Why look mean or tired when you
just need a little Botox to relax your
corrugators*?

Facts.
A reader asks:
I've had Clearlight treatments, but my acne came
back. Why? I thought it was supposed to cure
it.Dr.
Pilest:
Acne is the most stress-producing
skin condition on the planet. I wish there were a
complete cure, but there's not. Plain and simply,
acne can be controlled, not
cured.Clearlight is an alternative to oral
antibiotics and the stronger topical products that
can
leave your skin red and peeling all the time. Patients
who undergo a series of Clearlight treatments see
results faster than they would get with antibiotics
and there are no side effects, so it's a popular and
safely effective treatment. But, Clearlight isn't a
cure
either - it's a control measure and all control
measures require some type of ongoing maintenance
program.
And you have to stick to that program, even when
things seem to be "going good." I know it's
distressing and frustrating and I do sincerely wish
there were a magic wand I could wave over every
single one of my acne patients. The most I can offer
is 26 years of experience and the best available
technology. I truly wish it were more.

"Better than Botox?" |
|
|
|
Okay, here's the lowdown on why
nothing is better than
Botox. Advertisers are sometimes geniuses in
how they position a product. They ask the
question "Better than Botox?" and the implied
message is, of course, that their product is better
than Botox.It's not, and here's
why.
Any product or treatment that can actually alter
neuromotor function must have FDA approval. You
are, after all, changing how the nerves respond to
messages. If any topical product had that potential,
the dangers in its use would be overwhelming. So
what's in the "hot" products that try to compare
themselves to Botox? It's a chemically engineered
pentapeptide known commercially as Matrixyl -
which
is composed of 5 amino acids. Amino acids are the
building blocks of protein. Using a Matrixyl lotion
or cream may help with slowing of collagen
breakdown, but it will not affect the
neuromuscular
activity. The reason Botox works is that it
does affect the muscle activity, and the
only way it can do that is through injection. Phew!
StriVectin-SD and Regenerist are fine
moisturizers, and they will improve the texture and
feel of the skin to some degree. But there is no
possible way they do what Botox does. If you read
the ads carefully, they don't actually make that
claim...they simply ask a question and then lead you
to the conclusion. Now, nobody will ever have to ask
me to explain that again, right?Botox Press Release
Botox and Hyperhidrosis. We had quite a
response
to information we provided last month on
Hyperhidrosis. Many of our readers were completely
unaware of the treatment and relieved to discover its
existence. For those of you who missed the mention,
here it is again.
